United States History and Government Regents conversion chart — two scores in, one final score out

This exam has no single raw score. NYSED converts it with a two-way chart: your Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score down the side, your Total Part IIIB Essay Score across the top, and the final examination score where they meet. On the August 2026 administration a 65 took 27 of 44 objective points with an essay of 0, and 12 with an essay of 5 — the same exam, the same sitting, 15 points apart. Pick the exact sitting below; nothing here applies to an exam that has not been given.

Choose the administration your child actually sat — the list holds the 11 sittings NYSED has published a chart for, most recent first — then enter the Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score and pick the essay score. Both are needed: neither one alone has a conversion.

There is no chart for an exam that has not been given yet. NYSED publishes the conversion grid for an administration only after that administration has been scored, and the grid genuinely moves between sittings. This tool reads published grids and nothing else. Anyone telling a student what scores will earn a 65 at a future sitting is making it up.

The record, in three numbers

What 11 published United States History and Government charts show

27 / 44

Objective points for a 65 with an essay of 0, August 2026

Read from the chart for that administration. Not a target for any other sitting.

12 / 44

The same 65, with an essay of 5

One axis, two answers. This is why a single "raw score to pass" number cannot exist for this exam.

2 of 11

Essay scores from which an 85 is out of reach, August 2026

At an essay score of 0 or 0.5, no objective score on the chart — not even a perfect 44 — reaches 85. NYSED's own chart tops out below it.

The full session-by-session record — the objective score a 65 and an 85 took at each of the 11 essay scores, from June 2023 to August 2026, where at an essay of 2.5 alone the 65 line has run from 20 to 22 points — is further down this page, with the NYSED file for each sitting.

Curve history

United States History and Government Regents curve history — eleven curves, not one

This exam has no single curve. Every administration carries 11 different 65 lines — one per Total Part IIIB Essay Score. At an essay score of 2.5, the Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score needed for a 65 has run from 20 points (August 2024) to 22 points (June 2023) across the 11 sittings. Inside the August 2026 sitting alone, moving the essay from 0 to 5 moves that same line by 15 points. A chart can only draw one essay score at a time, so the graph below takes the middle of the axis and the tables under it carry all 11 columns.

United States History and Government — Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score needed for a 65 and an 85, with an essay score of 2.5

One point per published administration, June 2023 to August 2026. This exam has no single raw score, so a curve can only be drawn one essay score at a time — this one is the middle of the 0–5 axis, and all 11 columns are in the tables below. At this essay score the 65 line has run from 20 to 22 points out of 44. Where a sitting is missing from the record — cancelled, or never given a published chart — the line breaks rather than being joined across it.

Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score needed for an 85 — and where an 85 cannot be reached at all

« Out of reach » is a published fact, not a missing figure. Where a cell says so, no Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score on the chart — not even a perfect 44 — reaches a final score of 85 at that essay score. On the August 2026 chart that is true for an essay score of 0 or 0.5. That is the single most consequential thing this exam's chart says: a student aiming at 85 has to carry the essay, because the objective parts cannot make up for it.

United States History and Government Regents — Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score required for a final score of 85, by Total Part IIIB Essay Score. Cells marked « out of reach » are sittings where NYSED's own chart tops out below 85 in that column. Last verified September 7, 2026.

What is deliberately absent from these tables

June 2020, August 2020, January 2021, August 2021, January 2022 — cancelled administrations, so there is no row and no line segment across them; the curve above breaks there instead of stepping over. There is no row for a future sitting: NYSED publishes a grid after an administration is scored, never before. And there is no interpolated cell anywhere: the Total Part IIIB Essay Score takes 11 values and no others, so a score between two of them has no conversion at all.

Questions

United States History and Government scoring, answered

What is the raw score needed to pass the United States History and Government Regents?

There is no single raw score on this exam, and that is not a technicality: NYSED publishes a two-way chart rather than a list. The final score sits where the Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score and the Total Part IIIB Essay Score meet. On the August 2026 administration a 65 took 27 points out of 44 on the objective parts if the essay scored 0, and only 12 if the essay scored 5. Any site quoting one number for this exam has flattened one of the two axes.

Why is the United States History and Government essay scored in half points?

Because NYSED's chart is indexed that way: the Total Part IIIB Essay Score axis takes exactly 11 values — 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5 — and nothing in between. A score of 3.7 does not exist on the chart, which is why the tool above offers a list rather than a free-text box. If a combination is not on the axes, the tool says so instead of showing the nearest cell.

Can a United States History and Government student reach an 85 on the objective parts alone?

No — and the chart says so out loud. On the August 2026 administration, an essay score of 0 or 0.5 puts 85 out of reach entirely: even a perfect 44 on the Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score does not reach a final score of 85 in those columns. The lowest essay score from which 85 is reachable at all is 1. That is the single most useful thing this chart tells a student aiming high, and it is the reason the curve history below prints those cells as "out of reach" rather than as a dash.

Which United States History and Government administrations are covered?

11, from June 2023 to August 2026, each one a separate NYSED chart of 45 rows by 11 columns. The administrations cancelled around the pandemic — June 2020, August 2020, January 2021, August 2021, January 2022 — are absent because they were never held, and nothing is interpolated across them.

Does the United States History and Government chart show a performance level?

No. NYSED publishes no performance-level column on this exam's conversion charts, so none is shown. Working one out from the final score would mean inventing it.

Why is there no single "curve" for the United States History and Government Regents?

Because NYSED does not publish one. This exam converts on a two-way chart: the Total Part I, Part II, and Part IIIA Score down the side, the Total Part IIIB Essay Score across the top, and the final score where they meet. There are 11 essay scores on that axis — 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5 — so there are 11 different 65 lines in every administration, not one. That is why the curve history tables below are wide rather than tall, and why a site that quotes one number for this exam has quietly dropped an axis.

Why are there gaps in the curve history?

Because those administrations never took place: June 2020, August 2020, January 2021, August 2021, January 2022 were cancelled around the pandemic. The line on the chart breaks rather than jumping the gap, because joining the two edges would draw a data point that does not exist.

Where does this United States History and Government data come from?

From the conversion chart spreadsheets NYSED publishes on nysedregents.org — 11 files for this exam alone, 5,445 cells in total, each linked from its own result in the tool above. They are re-downloaded and re-parsed automatically, and nothing is published if a checksum moves, a file changes shape, or the grid changes size. Last verified September 7, 2026.
