10 official charts — June 2015 to June 2026 · given through June 2027

Physical Setting: Physics Regents conversion chart — raw score to scale score, session by session

On the June 2026 Physical Setting: Physics exam it took 50 raw points out of 85 to reach a 65, and 69 to reach an 85. Every administration has its own chart and they do not agree with one another — across the 10 published sittings we hold, the 65 line has sat anywhere between 48 and 50 raw points. Pick the exact sitting below; nothing here applies to an exam that has not been given.

Still administered through June 2027

This exam is still being given. NYSED's implementation schedule sets its last administration for June 2027, with Physical Science: Physics running alongside it until then — so the charts below are a record of the sittings published so far, not a closed archive. NYSED implementation schedule (PDF).

This exam has changed name. New York is replacing Physical Setting: Physics with Physical Science: Physics under its new science standards, with June 2027 set as the last administration of this one. If the exam your child sat is called Physical Science: Physics, its conversion charts are here. The two exams are scored on their own charts, so the name printed on the booklet decides which page you need — not which course your child took.

Make sure this is the right exam. New York gives two different exams whose names share a word: Physical Setting: Physics (this page, scored out of 85) and Physical Science: Physics. They have different charts, and their raw-score ranges overlap, so nothing on this page can catch the mix-up for you. Sat the Physical Science: Physics Regents instead? Use its chart → The exam title is printed on the front cover of the test booklet and on the score report.

Careful: Physical Science: Physics is a different exam with a different chart, and their raw scores overlap. Check the title on the front of the test booklet.

Loading the published charts for this exam…

There is no chart for an exam that has not been given yet. NYSED publishes the raw-to-scale conversion for an administration only after that administration has been scored, and the numbers genuinely move between sittings: the Algebra I raw total dropped from 86 points to 82 in June 2024, Algebra II did the same in June 2026, and the Level 3 range in Algebra I ran 65–73 in August 2015 and 65–79 in June 2016. So this tool reads published charts and nothing else. Anyone telling a student what raw score will earn a 65 at a future sitting is making it up.

Scores at or above 65 are shown in red — 65 is the passing score in New York, and 85 is what the State calls passing with distinction. This chart applies to the June 2026 administration only.

Range of the 65 line across every published sitting

From June 2015 to June 2026. This spread is the reason a chart from one year cannot read a score from another.

The full session-by-session record — raw total, raw points for a 65, raw points for an 85, and the 65 line as a share of the exam — is further down this page, with the NYSED file for each sitting.

And if the question is the other one — whether Physical Setting: Physics has been getting more demanding — what a 65 has cost at every Physical Setting: Physics sitting charts that one number across the whole record, as a share of the paper rather than a raw count.

And if the comparison is between exams rather than within one — a child choosing which science to sit, or a family wondering where Physical Setting: Physics stands next to the rest — how hard each Regents exam is, and what a 65 costs on each one puts all of them on the same scale: the share of the paper a 65 takes, from 2014 to 2026.

Curve history

Physical Setting: Physics Regents curve history — what a 65 cost at every sitting

Across 10 published Physical Setting: Physics administrations, the raw score needed for a 65 has run from 48 points (June 2015) to 50 points (June 2026) 56.5% to 58.8% of the paper. Every figure below is read from the NYSED chart for that sitting, and each row links to the file it came from. Nothing here is smoothed, averaged, or carried forward to a sitting that has not happened.

One point per published administration, June 2015 to June 2026. Where a sitting is missing from the record — cancelled, or simply never given a published chart — the line breaks rather than being joined across it.

What is deliberately absent from this table

June 2020, August 2020, January 2021, August 2021, January 2022 — cancelled administrations, so there is no row and no line segment across them; the curve above breaks there instead of stepping over. Administrations before June 2014 exist only as PDFs on the NYSED site and are not covered. And there is no row for a future sitting: NYSED publishes a chart after an administration is scored, never before.

Questions

Physical Setting: Physics scoring, answered

What raw score do you need to pass the Physical Setting: Physics Regents?

On the June 2026 administration it took 50 raw points out of 85 to reach a scale score of 65. That number belongs to that sitting and to no other: across the 10 published Physical Setting: Physics charts we hold, the raw points needed for a 65 have ranged from 48 to 50. Use the calculator above with the exact administration your child sat.

Does this work for the next Physical Setting: Physics Regents?

No. NYSED publishes a conversion chart only after an administration has been scored, so no chart exists for a sitting that has not happened. The charts here run from June 2015 to June 2026, and this exam is still being given: NYSED's implementation schedule runs it through June 2027. If you want to know how much the requirement has moved between sittings, the curve history further down this page shows the raw points needed for a 65 at every published administration — which is the honest version of that question.

Why is there no performance level for the Physical Setting: Physics Regents?

Because NYSED does not publish one on this exam's charts. Physical Setting: Physics is one of the pre-Common-Core Regents, reported on four derived levels rather than five, and its conversion charts carry a raw-score column and a scale-score column only. Printing a level here would mean inventing it, so the tool shows none.

Which Physical Setting: Physics administrations are covered?

10 of them, from June 2015 to June 2026. Sessions earlier than June 2014 exist only as PDFs on the NYSED site and are not covered here. The administrations cancelled around the pandemic — June 2020, August 2020, January 2021, August 2021, January 2022 — are absent because they were never held, and the special June 2021 administration, where it applies, is labelled as such rather than folded in with the ordinary sittings.

Is the Physical Setting: Physics Regents still given?

Yes, through June 2027. NYSED's implementation schedule ("Implementation Schedule for New Regents Examinations") sets June 2027 as the last administration of this exam, with Physical Science: Physics phasing in alongside it over four administrations so that students sit the exam matching the instruction they received. Until that date this is a live exam, and these charts are as useful for a student preparing for the next sitting as for one reading a score already earned.

Has the Physical Setting: Physics Regents curve got harder?

Across the 10 published administrations, the raw points needed for a 65 have ranged from 48 to 50 — a spread of 2 points. The curve history below shows the same requirement as a share of the paper, which is the view that survives a change in the size of the exam. What none of this supports is a claim about the next sitting.

Why are there gaps in the curve history?

Because those administrations never took place: June 2020, August 2020, January 2021, August 2021, January 2022 were cancelled around the pandemic. The lines break rather than jumping the gap — the drawing code emits a new segment whenever two points are not consecutive sittings — because joining them would draw a data point that does not exist. Where a special administration was held, it is labelled rather than treated as an ordinary session.

Can I reuse these numbers?

Yes. The whole dataset — this exam and every other one — is downloadable as CSV from the links in the curve history below, and the figures are NYSED’s, reproduced as published. Each row of the session table links to the NYSED file it came from, so anything here can be checked against the source in one click.

Where does this Physical Setting: Physics data come from?

From the conversion chart spreadsheets NYSED publishes on nysedregents.org — 10 files for this exam alone, each linked from its own result in the calculator. They are re-downloaded and re-parsed automatically, and nothing is published if a checksum moves, a file changes shape, or the reference values stop matching. Last verified September 7, 2026.
